When it comes to becoming parents, expectant couples must wait for nine months before finally meeting their little one. Nothing compares to the feeling of hearing a baby’s first cries after being born.
However, for some parents like Mary and Brad Kish of Illinois, USA, the birth of their child can be unexpected. Mary had a smooth pregnancy and delivery, but doctors noticed something was wrong with their daughter Michelle as soon as she opened her eyes.
After consulting with a geneticist from another hospital and going through medical texts, they discovered that Michelle had Hallermann-Streiff syndrome, a rare genetic condition with only 250 known cases worldwide.
Michelle has 26 out of the 28 symptoms associated with the condition, which also causes dwarfism. Despite being just two years apart in age, Michelle can barely reach over her sister’s waist.
Her condition requires a lot of support, including an electric wheelchair, hearing aid, probe, respirator, and visual aids. Michelle and her family have spent a significant amount of time in the hospital due to her illness, and she is sometimes mistaken for a child despite being 25 years old.
However, Michelle is a remarkable young woman who remains happy and positive despite the challenges she faces. She is an inspiration to many and aspires to become a doctor like her older sister, have a boyfriend, and pursue her dreams.
