George Clooney’s wife is facing online backlash for wearing a vintage floral dress during the duo’s vacation. Social media users feel as though the dress is far too mediocre and “tacky” for Amal Clooney’s charming beauty and chic style, a style that her husband has previously spoken about in only the highest regard.
Defending her title as the reigning queen of European vacation style, Amal Clooney, 46, wore a floral-print ensemble while on vacation with her dashing beau George Clooney, 63. Bringing a summer luxe feel to Saint-Tropez on June 29, Amal looked radiant in her dress; however, the public felt differently.
According to a profile Vogue published of the human rights lawyer’s outfit, Amal was spotted wearing the summery dress as she left Jardin Tropezina hand-in-hand with George, where the couple had lunch. Capturing the essence of an ideal lunch date under the sun, Amal’s mini dress featured a range of white, pink, orange, and neon yellow flowers.
It was made of pink toile fabric and complemented by the nude peep-toe heels Amal wore. She also accessorized her look with a white shoulder bag and oversized dark shades. The ruffle embellished dress is a vintage design from none other than fashion powerhouse icon Donatella Versace.
The dress, which also featured an asymmetrical hemline and a tiered skirt, was showcased in Versace’s 2004 spring collection aka the “Diva Alert.” This specific collection was extremely popular among A-list “It girls” Lindsay Lohan, Liv Tyler, and Britney Spears, who have worn the same print Amal opted for.
Donatella’s iconic spring 2004 collection also saw model Fernanda Tavares rock the same floral dress on the runway, with the only difference being that it was free of flowers.
Another model, Isabeli Fontana, adorned a similar dress in the same show, with this one being longer in length, neon-colored, and featuring a plunging neckline. That garment was called look 56 of the collection.
Shining a spotlight on Amal’s fashionable moment, Vogue took to Instagram to share a photo of her and George on the day she wore the “Carrie Bradshaw-approved” dress.
They accompanied their post with a lengthy caption that reads, “Quiet luxury? Amal Clooney doesn’t know her. The reigning queen of European vacation style has returned to the continent to defend her crown, kicking off the summer with a vintage piece originally featured in Versace’s spring 2004 collection.”
Although Amal’s dress comes from a widely praised and sought-after designer collection, the garment’s charm and allure went unnoticed by many people who were unimpressed with it. “Childish and cheap,” remarked an Instagrammer.
Expressing love for Amal but disdain for what she wore, another social media user commented, “Amal looks great, the dress is tacky and tasteless.” Echoing the criticism, someone else chimed in with, “The dress looks a bit old and not the right look for her unless they are glamping.”
Jumping on the dislike bandwagon, another Instagrammer noted, “Sorry Amal but you are too smart to wear those shoes in St Tropez!” However, amid the backlash, other people thought the dress was beautiful and perfectly suited for Amal.
“Nice dress 👗,” complimented a fan while another expressed, “Ohh fancy.” “So cute!” exclaimed an admirer on Facebook. Swooning over Amal, another fan gushed, “She is beautiful!”
There was also praise for Amal and George as a couple. One admirer took to the comment section of a post made about the fashion statement, writing, “Such a beautiful couple ❤️❤️.”
Amal’s floral Versace number, which Vogue says she likely got from Emerieu Shop online, is only one of many vintage pieces she has collected over time. When it comes to her fashion sense, sustainable dressing takes precedence regarding planning an outfit for an occasion.
For the DVF Awards last year (2023), Amal adorned a blush-colored dress from John Galliano’s Christian Dior 2000 fall collection. She has also worn a vintage Dior skirt suit for a past speaking engagement at the United Nations.
Vogue, who made it a point to end their profile on Amal’s recent outfit by highlighting their excited anticipation of seeing what she will wear next, is not the only party who thinks Amal has impeccable taste. Her iconic husband has also gushed over her incredible looks.
Speaking with ET’s Nischelle Turner at the premiere of his then-new movie “The Boys in the Boat,” last year December (2023), George Clooney boasted about Amal Clooney, who wore an Atelier Versace gown for the event.
“She cleans up. I’m always embarrassed because I’m wearing something that I’ve worn, like, 1,000 times,” George previously disclosed. Joking about how slighted he feels by his gorgeous wife garnering all the attention with her looks, the actor quipped, “My entire career has been reduced to a plus-one now.”
Continuing on, George added, “I did one of those Women in Film things a couple years ago, and I had to introduce myself as ‘Amal Clooney’s husband’ because, honestly, I was dead otherwise.”
Aside from cracking jokes about playing second fiddle to his beloved wife, George also spoke about how he and Amal’s twins, Alexander and Ella Clooney, came to visit him on set.
The Hollywood star also briefly touched on his cameo in “The Flash,” alongside Ezra Miller, where he reprised his role as Batman aka Bruce Wayne, which he played in the 1997 sequel “Batman & Robin.”
