Police in Wolcottville, Indiana, discovered the bodies of Rebecca Hughes, 32, and her three daughters—Evalynn, 8, Allison, 6, and Amelia, 5—on September 17, after responding to a welfare check at their residence. The investigation, now led by the Indiana State Police, is ongoing, with the cause of death yet to be determined pending autopsy results. Authorities have assured the public that there is no immediate danger.

Jonathan Newell, the girls’ father, shared his heartbreak over the tragic loss. Initially, he dismissed concerns raised by his mother, telling her, “Don’t worry, she’s fine, the kids are fine,” only to later learn of the devastating news. Reflecting on his emotions, he said, “Sometimes you’re mad. Sometimes you’re sad. Other times you’re so dissociated you don’t even feel like you’re there.”

The community has come together to support Jonathan, raising over $45,000 through a GoFundMe campaign to assist with funeral costs. “This is really the last thing I get to do for them,” Jonathan said, deeply touched by the generosity of strangers.

Amidst the mourning, Jonathan has chosen to use this tragedy as an opportunity to raise awareness about mental health, urging parents to seek help if they need it. “If you have kids and you need help, then get it,” he pleaded in an interview, hoping to prevent future tragedies.
