Elliot Costello’s meeting with a young girl named Thea in Cambodia became the catalyst for a movement against child sexual abuse. Thea, who had survived abuse, painted one of Elliot’s fingernails during their conversation. Touched by the gesture, Elliot vowed to keep it painted as a reminder of her pain, which ultimately inspired the #PolishedMan movement.

#PolishedMan encourages men to paint one fingernail, symbolizing the one in five children affected by sexual violence. The movement seeks to challenge harmful behaviors and attitudes worldwide. Elliot highlights that men are responsible for 96% of child abuse cases and stresses the importance of male-led change.

“As she painted my nail, I promised her I would keep it that way—to remember her and her suffering,” Elliot said.

The painted nail sparks conversations about child abuse, raising awareness and support for prevention. Donations help fund education programs for child survivors. The movement calls for more men, including public figures, to join in and spread the message. Share this to raise awareness.
