Raising kids can be a real challenge, especially in this day and age. Young parents not only face criticism and unsolicited advice from family members, but also from complete strangers online. Jordan Driskell, a 31-year-old father, had five quintuplets at the age of five, which can be very demanding. He decided to purchase leashes designed for young children as a unique solution to his problem, enabling him to keep his boisterous young children under control when out in public.
Previously, Driskell’s family used a stroller with six seats, but that became boring for the youngsters who wanted to roam and explore their surroundings. Using the leashes, the children can explore without their father losing control or track of them, keeping them safe.
However, when Driskell shared a video of the family’s trip to the aquarium, it garnered a lot of criticism from over 3 million viewers who believed the kids should not have been on leashes as they are not animals. Parenting and adolescent development specialist Dr. Deborah Gilboa, on the other hand, believes that giving a child a leash does not make them feel like an animal. In fact, it is an excellent tool for controlling young toddlers or kids with neurological differences in public.
While a leash can be problematic for neurotypical youngsters who have not honed their listening abilities by the ages of eight or nine, Dr. Gilboa believes that parents should have the freedom to parent the way they want without facing unnecessary judgment from society.
