The bond between twins is a truly unique and special one, forged as they share their mother’s womb and develop together during pregnancy. Unsurprisingly, this close bond often persists after birth, with many newborn twins wanting to be with each other as much as possible, and this was demonstrated in a heartwarming video that went viral in 2013. In the video, a woman uses a special bathing technique called Thalasso Baby Bath, invented by Parisian maternity nurse Sonia Rochel, to bathe a pair of newborn twins – a boy and a girl – who couldn’t stop hugging and holding each other in the water.
Rochel’s technique involves running water over the baby’s head with their eyes closed and mouth and nose above the waterline, allowing them to breathe easily. She discovered that when the babies felt the water, they reacted as if they were back in the womb, and for these twins, that meant holding on to each other throughout the bath. It’s worth noting, however, that the Thalasso bath is only suitable for babies under two months old and should not be attempted at home.
Another set of twins developed an incredibly close bond while still in the womb, as they shared the same amniotic sac. This put them at high risk of having their umbilical cords wrapped around their necks due to the limited space. Vicky Plowright, the mother of these twins, recalls her anxiety during the pregnancy, saying: “Within an hour I knew we were expecting twins, but they could be in danger… It was torture, thinking we could lose them at any moment.”
At the 12-week scan, however, a specialist sonographer saw the twins in a life-saving embrace, holding hands and preventing their cords from tangling enough to harm them. Vicki and her husband Chris were overjoyed, and their twins were born healthy after being delivered at 32 weeks. The twins have become even closer since their birth, with Vicky stating, “Before they met the world, they knew each other and grew up together in such a small space that I knew they would have a special bond for the rest of their lives.”
